You need to decide exactly what you want to write about on your site before you start writing anything. You’ll want to stick with your chosen topic for a while since that will help build an audience and drive search traffic. If you’re launching a business site (and most of us are), then choosing a niche people who buy cars online are probably too broad, but people who want luxury cars from Europe might be interested in buying online and make sure it relates closely to your business.
Set up Google Analytics
Setting up your site with Google Analytics is a great place to start. This free service from Google, which you can set up in less than eight minutes, will give you an overview of who’s visiting your site and from where. It also gives you some insight into what pages people are viewing and for how long, as well as what devices people are using.
Create relevant links and content
First, you need to start building links. If you don’t have any links yet, find a few sites in your niche and reach out with a simple email. Don’t mention that it’s related to SEO until they get back to you (the common follow-up question is What is SEO?). but always let them know what page on your site they should link back to.
If you want your business to be seen, you have to do more than just post something once or twice a year. You need consistency. If people don’t see your website as a reliable source of information and advice, they won’t go back. So if you haven’t yet—or if it’s been a while since you have—make sure that your site is publishing consistently and frequently. Three times per week is best. Once per day would be better.
Get backlinks from reputable sites
If you’re just starting out with SEO, don’t worry about spammy backlinks. Instead, try to get links from other sites that are also linked on reputable sites. Use a tool like Open Site Explorer and see which sites already link back to your competitors. Make contact with them (through social media or email) and ask if they would be willing to link back to your site as well. You might even offer a free resource for them or a share of your profits.
