Kanye West was born on October 11, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up with his mother Donda (also known as Dr. Donda West) and sister Kimberly. His father Ray West left the family when Kanye was three years old, which influenced Kanye’s music from an early age: he started writing poetry at age six or seven because “I didn’t want my mom to think I didn’t know how.”

Kanye attended high school at Toccoa Falls High School before dropping out in ninth grade due to his interest in hip-hop and R&B music; he later went on to attend Chicago State University where he studied philosophy but never graduated (he did however get his bachelor’s degree).
